Jenna and Alex brought all the color and modern touches to their Detroit Golf Club wedding! These two were a joy to work with. As their wedding invitations designer, it was a treat to collaborate with them from out of state, in tandem with Nicola of Simply Brilliant Events. Thanks to the beautiful photos from Alisha Tova (including tons on film!), let’s relive their day.

Design Elements for this Detroit Golf Club wedding

This couple wanted to bring all the fun color and modern vibes. This was their mood board provided by their florist, The Dainty Daisy, which really set the tone for me in starting to think about their invitation suite.

We’d be leaning into the burgundy and chartreuse, with pops of bright red. A blush accent helped keep things in balance.

Invitations

Jenna and Alex’s invitations set the tone for their modern and playful Detroit Golf Club wedding. The chartreuse envelope was the first major pop of color, right at the mailbox. Once guests opened the envelopes, they were greeted with a fun surprise: a custom illustration of DGC. On the front lawn, I drew Freida — Jenna and Alex’s sweet one-eyed schnauzer pup.

Along with her, the venue illustration featured a pair of ducks. Why? Alex is Korean, and in Korean culture, two wooden ducks are gifted to the couple as a traditional part of the wedding ceremony. Afterward, the newlyweds keep them as home decor, to serve as a reminder of their vows. While Jenna and Alex weren’t planning to include the traditional ducks as part of their ceremony, they wanted to include them throughout the day with small touches. This nod to tradition, invented in a new way, felt like the perfect “easter egg” detail in their invitations.

The rest of the suite was playful too, with a mix of eggplant, red, and blush, as well as rose gold foil stamping. They chose a casual calligraphy style and a simple JA monogram emblem.

These photos were taken separately from the wedding day, styled and photographed in studio by Annie Lui Photography.

From Design Mockup to Reality

Here, you can see the digital mockup I sent to the couple as part of their stationery design process. You can see each element included, at scale and in reference to the other elements.

This is part of every proof round! Then, we take what was on screen and it translates to real life.

Ok, now back to the wedding day photos from the mega talented Alisha Tova.

Getting Ready

Jenna’s gown and Alex tux were both clean and classically understated. But then, add in Alex’s purple socks and Jenna’s punchy bouquet and we’re off to the races!

Jenna and Alex got ready at The Shinola Hotel, before their Detroit Golf Club wedding.

First Look

Ceremony

Jenna and Alex’s outdoor ceremony was full of joy! As their invitations designer, I also created all of the day-of-wedding paper goods, signage, and other printed materials. Guests got their first glimpse with the ceremony program I designed.

Along with the standard order of ceremony and a list of their VIPs, Jenna and Alex opted to include an explanation of the Korean tradition with the ducks. In their clever way, we worded that section with a cheeky heading, “What the duck?”

Reception Design Details

Their Detroit Golf Club wedding reception was bursting with fun details. Let’s walk through them all!

Welcome and Cocktail Hour

After the outdoor ceremony, guests came indoors for cocktail hour and were greeted by a welcome sign.

At the bar, they enjoyed custom napkins, featuring the pair of ducks once again. They also enjoyed stir sticks, where their sweet pup made another appearance!

The match boxes at the bar were double sided, with both — because why choose only one?

Their bar signage was the coolest. I laser cut multiple layers to create this three dimensional sign. Hard to tell in the photos, but the back piece of the sign itself (behind the JA and “Signature Drinks” heading) was a holographic, opalescent acrylic material.

Installation - Large format seating chart

Jenna and Alex opted to include an interactive element for their cocktail hour, as things transitioned into the main reception. I designed an 8-foot tall seating chart for them, so their guests enjoyed a statement-maker with this functional piece.

In order to keep costs down, we opted to print this on foam core, rather than doing a fully built wall (which I also offer). The sign was placed in a sturdy wooden base and their florist added a little pop at the bottom!

I love getting the opportunity create something functional and beautiful for guests to enjoy — and use.

Tabletop Decor Elements

I designed a funky and fun wavy-shaped menu for Jenna and Alex, complete with a purple tassel.

In front of each guest’s seat, their place card was color-coded (with the stripe on the left) for the wait staff, indicating which entrée that person had selected.

The table numbers echoed the wave design and chartreuse once again.

Detroit Golf Club Reception

These two brought the party! A tent full of disco balls, a steady flow of cocktails, a packed dance floor, and a fabulous outfit change… yes, please!

Wishing you two a lifetime of happiness.
